She loved to paint and draw the life she saw around her; landscapes, portraits, cityscapes all were a source of inspiration for her. Although she longed to pursue a career as an artist, more practical voices prevailed, but just as she was to begin design school, her life took an abrupt turn and she left Hungary to live in the United States. She learned to be a silversmith, rug-maker, quilt designer, decorative furniture painter and just about anything else that involved using her hands and her natural eye for color and form. Pursuing these passions, Anna enrolled in an architectural drawing and rendering class as well as attending more formal art classes where she learned about the technical aspects of painting and drawing. Although she began painting on a small scale, her early patrons pushed her to explore larger paintings where she found considerable success, loving the energy and depth of field she could achieve in this more expansive format. Her dramatic use of high color contrast and reflecting imagery is a montage of European travel memories, photographs and imagination that captures an essence of freshness and delight offering universal appeal. With a significant collector base in Southern California, Anna is an emerging talent with great potential. These wonderful works of art are available by contacting us directly at billyblueeye cox.

Before Van Briggle’s work became widely known, most art pottery was finished with a high gloss and colorful decorations, in the Victorian fashion of ornate design. That style changed toward the end of the nineteenth century with the advent of Art Nouveau when European artists and architects began exploring a new and modern type of art.

The person who applies the glaze to the once-fired bisque pottery. To be fair, the artist who first created a design should be identified as the “artist” of a piece which subsequently gets cast thousands of times, and should have his initials incised on the bottom.

But such is not the case. Only on wheel-thrown original pieces is the actual artist identified, and only on those pieces is the mark called the “artist mark. This is done when the etcher refined a piece or added carved decoration to the thrower’s original. Without knowing whom is whom, it can get confusing. We hope these tables will help unravel the mystery. We don’t pretend that the following is a complete and concise listing of all bottom marks.
