Giuseppe Pagnoni, PhD, Emory assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and co-workers used functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI to examine changes in blood flow in the brain when people meditating were interrupted by stimuli designed to mimic the appearance of spontaneous thoughts. The study compared 12 people from the Atlanta area with more than three years of daily practice in Zen meditation with 12 others who had never practiced meditation. While having their brains scanned, the subjects were asked to focus on their breathing. The authors found that differences in brain activity between experienced meditators and novices after interruption could be seen in a set of areas often referred to as the “default mode network. After interruption, experienced meditators were able to bring activity in most regions of the default network back to baseline faster than non-meditators. This effect was especially prominent in the angular gyrus, a region important for processing language. This skill could be important in conditions such as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder and major depression, characterized by excessive rumination or an abnormal production of task-unrelated thoughts,” Pagnoni says. Meditatio is the second of four steps of Lectio Divina , an ancient form of Christian prayer. Meditation refers to a mental or spiritual state that may be attained by such practices, and also refers to the practice of that state. Christian, Judaic, and Islamic forms of meditation are typically devotional, scriptural or thematic, while Asian forms of meditation are often more purely technical.

Home Decision Time It is possible to relieve your mental suffering around making decisions by applying the Buddhist practice of mindfulness. As a Buddhist meditation teacher, I often counsel students seeking help with making various life choices. The most common decisions they present are about whether to take a new job, have a baby, leave a marriage, take an ethical stand against some wrongdoing, undergo a medical procedure, or make a life change in order to dedicate more time to their spiritual journey.
The advice they desire from me is twofold and may well apply to you: Before you can begin to make a wise decision, you first need to be real with yourself about the situation: Is there a genuine decision to be made, or are you just postponing the inevitable? For example, one student, Gloria, came to me for advice about her job, saying she was thinking about quitting.
As I questioned her, Gloria realized that her choice between staying in the job and leaving was not real. In fact, she was at such odds with her supervisor that there was almost no chance of her staying. Meanwhile her self-confidence was being destroyed. She came to understand that believing she had a decision to make was actually a way of avoiding the anxiety and fear of job-hunting.
At the same time, other forms of meditation developed in China, and only slightly later, in Japan. The Bhagavad Gita, an epic poem that describes the philosophy of yoga, meditation and spirituality, was written around BCE. By 20 BCE, spiritual exercises involving mindfulness had spread to the west and were documented in early Greek texts, but the practice was not embraced by early Christianity although prayer and meditation share remarkable similarities.
